Island salt is a different opponent
Humidity and salt air on the island fight the boats, and they fight the repair work too. Resin and gelcoat cure differently at 90 percent humidity with salt condensing on every surface overnight, so we schedule island lamination for the right part of the day and tent work when the sea breeze is throwing spray. That's the kind of thing you learn by ruining a repair once, and we did our learning a long time ago.

My hull sides went chalky after two summers at Dauphin Island Marina. Can that be saved or is it a paint job?
Usually it can be saved. Chalking is oxidized gelcoat, and if there's enough thickness left we wet-sand, compound and seal it back to gloss. If the gelcoat has been cut too many times or is crazed through, then we talk re-gel or paint. Island boats chalk faster than bay boats, so a yearly seal makes a real difference.
What's a transom replacement cost on an offshore center-console?
Transom replacement runs $2,500 to $8,000. A single-outboard bay boat sits at the low end, a big twin-engine offshore hull with a full-height transom sits at the top. If yours is cracking at the bracket or flexing, get it looked at now, because a failing transom on a pass boat is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one.
Do you actually come out to the island, or do I have to trailer the boat to Mobile?
We come to you. Dauphin Island is a regular stop, and we work at the marina, on Aloe Bay docks, and at houses on the island. For hauled-out or bottom work we'll tell you honestly if a mainland yard makes more sense, but the majority of repairs happen right where the boat sits.
I hit the rocks near Fort Gaines and gouged the hull below the waterline. How bad is that?
It depends on depth. A gouge into gelcoat only is a $150 to $500 fix. If it's into laminate, plan on a hull section repair at $500 to $1,500, done with the boat out of the water. Don't leave laminate open to salt water for weeks, it wicks in and grows the repair.
Spider cracks keep showing up around my deck hardware. Why, and what does fixing them involve?
That pattern on an island boat usually means the core under the hardware has taken water and the skin is flexing. We open a test spot, dry or replace the wet core, re-bed the hardware and re-gel. Fixing the cracks without fixing the core is a six-month repair, and we don't sell those.
